Final Reflection

College is different for everyone and most have an idea of what college is. For my first semester of college, I didn’t know what to expect or what I was getting myself into. TAMUCC gave me an experience most don’t get in college and that was being in a learning community. The Political Science Learning Community has made me change how I see something in my learning and life. This has made my college life unique and different from most college experience.

When thinking about how I have been an active person in the Political Science Learning Community a couple of things come to mind. One being that because of this community I’ve been come more active and an open person in speaking in my classrooms. Being in this community has taught me to make more friends out of my social norm. Now when looking at my friend group we all have different political backgrounds. We all know we have different views on political subject matters, and have learned to respect their opinion. Because one thing you learn in this community is that everyone has a different opinion on politics, and no one view is the exactly the same. Making me believe the way I think now is more diverse compared to when I first started college.

The research I did this semester was the effect social media has con children’s mental and social development. This ties in with the Political Science Learning Community because social media is where the get their news or to see what’s going on in the world. This is also how most kids know what’s happening in politics because of the fast pace of social media. The story behind me coming up with this topic is my curiosity on how social media was affecting my younger siblings. Also, to see different between the younger generation growing up with social media and how the old generation grow up without it. They only fear I held during the researching was, is this a topic I could find connection in political science.

This course and classes were different than anything I had done before in high school. The English class this semester has made me become a better thinker and go more into depth when trying to find an answer. Another I learned in that class is to have a scout mindset when someone questions what you think or say. So as a student I can be actively curios in learning and find a really understanding in solving a question. First year seminar has taught how to be in communication with my professor or people in my life in general. That class was important to me as a student to help me understand the confusing world of college. In a democracy you need critical thinking so on can get the right answer and to understand in depth the whole picture. We also need the diversity in it so there is multiple point of views and not just one.

As a final observation in my first semester of college being in the Political Science Learning Community. The assignment that we out taught are not just for grads but are there as tools to use in the real world. Symposium helped put all the things I learned in class out into the world. With using the digital portfolio thought this time I feel I’ve watched myself grow academical and as a person. Allowing me to showcase my life and experience in college.
